Wall thickness is often overlooked when selecting exhaust components, but it directly affects the strength, weight, and longevity of your exhaust system. Understanding the difference between 1.5mm and 2mm wall thickness helps you make the right choice for your application.
1.5mm Wall Thickness – The Standard
The majority of our bends, straight pipe, and flex pipe are manufactured with a 1.5mm wall thickness. This is the industry standard for custom exhaust fabrication and offers an excellent balance of strength, weight, and workability.
Benefits of 1.5mm:
- Lighter weight — reduces overall system mass
- Easier to cut, bend, and weld
- More than adequate for most passenger and performance vehicles
- Available across our full diameter range (32mm – 127mm)
2mm Wall Thickness – Heavy Duty
For applications where extra strength is needed, we stock select products in 2mm wall thickness. The thicker wall provides greater resistance to vibration fatigue, physical damage, and extreme heat cycling.
When to Use 2mm:
- Off-road and 4×4 vehicles where ground clearance is tight and impacts are likely
- Commercial vehicles and trucks with heavy-duty exhaust demands
- Motorsport builds where extreme heat and vibration are constant
- Large-diameter systems (114mm and 127mm) that benefit from added rigidity
Available 2mm Products:
We currently stock 2mm wall thickness 90° bends in the following sizes:
- 85mm 304ss
- 114mm in both 201ss and 304ss
- 127mm in both 201ss and 304ss
Which Should You Choose?
For the vast majority of custom exhaust builds — performance cars, daily drivers, and workshop fabrication — 1.5mm is the right choice. It is strong enough for virtually all road-going applications and is easier to work with.
Choose 2mm when you need extra durability in harsh environments, on larger-diameter systems, or where the exhaust is exposed to physical stress.
