Flex Pipes Explained – Types, Sizes, and When to Use Them

Flex pipes are a critical but often underappreciated component in any exhaust system. They absorb vibration and movement between the engine and the rest of the exhaust, preventing stress fractures, cracked welds, and premature failure.

Why Flex Pipes Matter

Your engine moves on its mounts — rocking, twisting, and shifting under load. The exhaust system, bolted to the chassis and underbody, remains relatively fixed. Without a flex section to absorb that movement, the rigid pipe will eventually crack or break a weld.

Flex pipes are typically installed close to the engine — between the exhaust manifold or turbo downpipe and the rest of the system — where the movement difference is greatest.

Types of Flex Pipe

Interlock with Braided Outer

This is the most common type for passenger and performance vehicles. The inner layer is a corrugated interlocking stainless steel tube that provides flexibility, while the braided outer layer adds strength and heat resistance. We stock these in 100mm, 150mm, and 200mm lengths across diameters from 38mm to 89mm.

Interlock with Netted Outer

For larger diameters (101mm–127mm), we use a netted outer construction instead of braided. The net provides the necessary flexibility and heat shielding at these larger sizes. Available in 200mm and 300mm lengths.

2-Meter Interlocking Flex

For complex custom routing where standard rigid pipe would not fit, we stock 2-meter lengths of interlocking flex tubing from 45mm to 127mm. These are used for challenging fitments, tight spaces, and applications where the exhaust path requires significant bending without welded joints.

Choosing the Right Length

Flex pipe length determines how much movement the joint can absorb:

  • 100mm — compact fitment, minimal flex, suitable for tight spaces
  • 150mm — good all-round length for most passenger vehicles
  • 200mm — the most popular choice for performance builds, provides excellent vibration absorption
  • 300mm — heavy-duty applications and large-diameter systems
